Benavidez goes in on Canelo: what did he say about Saul Alvarez?
The Mexican Monster is preparing for his fight this weekend at 175 against Gvozdyk but didn’t hesitate to slam Alvarez in an interview.
An exciting boxing weekend is expected when Gervonta Davis and David Benavidez step into the ring in the same card on Saturday.
The Mexican Monster went up in weight to take on former light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the co-main event. It will be Benavidez’s first fight since he defeated Demetrius Andrade via referee stoppage in the sixth round in November 2023.
He tried to make the Canelo Alvarez fight happen, but the Mexican superstar fought Jaime Munguia instead. Alvarez expressed that he would be ready to enter the ring to face Benavidez if granted $200 million, but nobody offered that money to make the mega-fight happen.
In that situation, Benavidez preferred to go up to the light heavyweight division, as he’s quite big for the super middleweight class and saw he couldn’t get the Canelo fight for all the marbles.
Benavidez slams Canelo in an interview
Although Benavidez is fully focused on his fight against the dangerous Gvozdyk this weekend, he had the time to answer some Canelo-related questions in an interview with Million Dollaz Worth of Game, and El Bandera Roja didn’t hesitate to attack the Guadalajara native.
“Well, look at this. I’m going to throw another thing at you guys. When the greatest Canelo came out, the one that fought Triple G the first time, dude popped dirty for clenbuterol, bro”, he said.
“Why do you think the second fight didn’t happen? For me, that was the best Canelo I’ve ever seen, but that was Canelo [fighting] off steroids. Everybody else that he’s fought….Amir Khan, Daniel Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders, Caleb Plant, these guys are all weak”, Benavidez added.
“So that’s why I see Canelo Alvarez and I think he’s not as good as everybody thinks. Because the best one was [fighting] off clenbuterol. That’s why he looked so good. He said that he ate meat that was tainted in Mexico. I’ve talked to people. They say that for him to test positive off a piece of meat he would’ve had to eat the whole cow”, he continued.
Benavidez publicly attacking Canelo this way could be a strategy from the Phoenix-bred talent to try to make Alvarez angry and make him more interested in fighting him.
Meanwhile, Benavidez knows that if he gets the better of Gvozdyk this weekend, he will probably have a title shot for all the belts at light heavyweight against the winner of the Dmitry Bivol-Artur Beterbiev clash.
