Canelo on Ryder: “It’s a very big fight”
A few names have been suggested for Canelo Álvarez’s next fight but facing John Ryder in London looks like the best option for the Mexican.
Saúl Canelo Álvarez is recovering from his hand surgery and is willing to get back to the ring as soon as possible. In the meantime, many opponents have called out the Mexican superstar as possible fight options once the Guadalajara fighter is ready to get back on track.
But the one that seems to attract him the most is the possibility of flying to the UK to face John Ryder, who recorded a fifth-round injury stoppage win over Zach Parker in November at the O2 Arena in London.
“It would be interesting to fight with John Ryder in London, isn’t it? Because he is from there, it would be a very big fight”, he said to Izquierdazo during the unveiling of a statue in his honor at his native town of Juanacatlán.
“But the truth is that I haven’t talked about that, and have not negotiated an opponent yet”, he admitted.
Canelo was happy to see the tribute that his people paid to him with that monument but also because he’s quickly recovering from his hand surgery.
“The doctor, before coming to Mexico, checked my hand, and told me that everything is going well and that I can start to punch with it”, he explained.
Canelo, who last defeated Gennady Golovkin by unanimous decision in their trilogy, will also have an eye on the February Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez clash, as the winner is expected to get into the ring against Álvarez.
