Mikey Garcia could return to boxing

His brother and coach Robert Garcia admitted the former champ is considering the idea of getting back to the ring.

Update:
His brother and coach Robert Garcia admitted the former champ is considering the idea of getting back to the ring.

Boxing could see the return of one of his former champions soon. The former four-division champion Mikey Garcia could be gloving up again, according to his brother and trainer Robert Garcia.

Garcia retired from the sport quietly, announcing it by changing his Instagram profile to read “Retired World Champ 126, 130, 135, 140 lbs.” Something his coach Robert confirmed in different interviews afterward.

More than one year later, Robert admitted that there’s a strong possibility of seeing Mikey Garcia back into action.

“He’s thinking about it”, said Robert Garcia during an interview.

Robert also revealed that his brother has been attempting to round himself back into shape.

“He’s been back in the gym the past couple of weeks”, he said.

Garcia’s return would be great news for the boxing community, as the former four-time world champion has always been a relevant fighter, not afraid of accepting fights against boxers that many would prefer to duck.

Mikey Garcia’s ‘decline’

Garcia, who turned professional in 2006, had an undefeated record of 40-0 before taking on the biggest challenge of his career.

In 2019, the Ventura native went up against welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. in his quest to try to claim a fifth world title, after holding belts in the featherweight, super featherweight, lightweight, and super lightweight divisions.

However, things didn’t play out as planned and Garcia ended up losing a clear unanimous decision to the undefeated Spence Jr. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

After that, Garcia tried to redeem himself against Spaniard Sandor Martín, a fight where the American was the heavy favorite.

Garcia’s performance, though, wasn’t as razor-sharp as expected and the Barcelona fighter pulled off the upset by winning a majority decision in their 10-round welterweight contest in October at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, California.
