Chávez Jr. returns to Mexico amid Sinaloa cartel investigation
Although the boxer was transferred to prison, he will continue his trial at liberty for security reasons.

Julio César Chávez Jr. was extradited to Mexico after being arrested in the United States. He already has a sentence issued by a supervising judge, linking him to proceedings related to arms trafficking and ties to the Sinaloa cartel; however, he was granted the privilege of continuing his legal process while remaining free.
The director of Cefereso requested that Chávez Jr.’s hearing be conducted via video call. The document states: “Restricted travel; video conference is being arranged for criminal case 15/2023.”
The request was made to ensure the trial could proceed without physically transferring the boxer, prioritizing his safety: “It is requested that the hearing scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Time) on Saturday, August 23, be held from inside the Cefereso, by the alternative method of video conference and/or in the room available for this purpose in this Administrative Unit, as a measure to ensure the security and physical integrity of Julio César Chávez Jr. and the personnel responsible for the transfer.”
After spending 46 days in the custody of U.S. authorities, he was extradited to Mexico to face an arrest warrant that had been active since March 2023. This warrant stems from a 2019 investigation in which he is accused of arms trafficking and organized crime-related offenses.
