The cat is out of the bag in the sport of boxing because the United States government is looking for Daniel Kinahan, one of the most powerful promoters and managers, because of his ties with the mob.

“The Kinahan Organized Crime Group smuggles deadly narcotics, including cocaine, to Europe, and is a threat to the entire licit economy through its role in international money laundering,” Brian E. Nelson, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said in the news release.

Kinahan has been involved in boxing a long time

Daniel Kinahan is accused of being a gang boss and a figure in organized crime on a global scale. The promoter from Dublin, Ireland was allegedly controlling and managing the operations of the Kinahan Organized Crime Group, now referred to as the Kinahan Cartel.

The group was a criminal organization which smuggled drugs and firearms into Ireland, the UK, other European cities and “has associations that facilitate international criminal activity in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.”

The US Department of the Treasury worked alongside with the authorities in Ireland to work on this case and on Tuesday morning announced in a press conference a $15 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Kinahan, his father, Christopher V. Kinahan and his brother, Christopher V. Kinahan Jr. and the reward for each individual is $5 million.

Daniel Kinahan has been involved with fighters and promoters for a long time, but his relationship with boxing was not mentioned during this press conference. So far no one in the sport of boxing has been accused of any wrongdoing, but things could change as the story unfolds.

Who does Kinahan advise?

Kinahan had a strong relationship with boxing management company MTK Global and he was in charge of overseeing the activities.

Some big names managed by this company are Tyson Fury, Terence Crawford, Josh Taylor, Jack Catterall, Savannah Marshall, Liam Smith and Diaz. Also, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said that Kinahan was ‘honorable, in a 2020 story in the Irish Sun.
