Davis vs Lomachenko conversations: When would the fight take place?
Boxing promoter Bob Arum said both sides started talking about a potential showdown before Davis’ last fight and hopes they can get to a deal.
Gervonta Davis has become one of the biggest names in boxing and a PPV attraction due to his boxing style and remarkable performances during his career.
Last weekend Tank proved he’s the WBA lightweight champion for a reason and while many believed Frank Martin would give the Baltimore native plenty of problems inside the ring, it just took a few rounds for Davis to figure out his opponent and knock him out with a vicious left.
After the fight, Gervonta was immediately asked about his future and a potential rematch with the controversial Ryan Garcia. While the undefeated star said he wouldn’t mind facing and beating Garcia again, it’s not the fight he’s looking for.
As previously reported at AS USA, Davis is open to taking on whoever brings something to the table, in this case, money fights but also legacy. And for Davis, two names stand out, Vasyl Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson.
Conversations for a Davis vs Lomachenko fight at the end of 2024
A fight between the American and Ukrainian fighters would undoubtedly be among the most anticipated in 2024. Calvin Ford’s boxer seems unstoppable, and his knockout ratio keeps improving, while Loma is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and after his controversial loss to Devin Haney, he stopped George Kambosos Jr. in great fashion in Australia.
Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum spoke about the possible fight and admitted that both sides were already in contact before Davis’ last fight.
“Nobody is dragging anybody to the table. We have been talking to the PBC people all along we will absolutely resume conversations this week. It won’t be the start of the negotiations”, he said to Boxing News.
“Carl Moretti [of Top Rank who represents Loma] has been talking to Luis DeCubas [of PBC who looks after Tank] for a couple of weeks now. Hopefully, we’ll put it together for some time in November. Nobody is dragging anybody to the table. Both sides know it’s a big fight, which means they’re looking forward to earning a lot of money, and they’re both competitive guys”, he stated.
It would be interesting to see two southpaws go to-to-toe in a chess match, as Davis always takes a few rounds to study his opponents, and Lomachenko is also a clever fighter in the ring with a great boxing IQ that would have a clear strategy against Floyd Mayweather’s former protege.
