Did Tyson Fury change his name?
‘The Gipsy King’ and Oleksandr Usyk meet today in one of the most anticipated heavyweight clashes in recent years.
The time has finally come. Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyl will settle the score in an unprecedented heavyweight battle, as both men are undefeated and the winner will be the first-ever four-belt undisputed king.
‘The Gipsy King’ (34-0-1, 24 KOs) is one of the most charismatic and feared boxers, as he hasn’t tasted defeat as a professional. After beating every opponent he has faced, he wants to make more history and defeat Usyk, considered his toughest test.
They were expected to fight in February, but the clash had to be postponed after the Brit got injured while sparring with a cut above his eye. Fury is the bigger guy and many believe that will be a crucial factor in the fight, whereas other pundits think that the Ukrainian’s speed and movement could give him the victory.
Tyson Fury and the stories behind his name
Fury’s full name is Luke Tyson Fury, and he was born June 1, 1988. He was born in Wythenshawe (south of Manchester) to an Irish family with a long history in boxing and bare-knuckle boxing.
There has been some controversy surrounding the ‘Tyson’ element of his name, with his father, John, stating: “I thought there’s only one name fitting for him, he’s fought hard to become a person living in this world. Mike Tyson was the best in the world at that time. Tyson Luke Fury – that’s his name.”
However, recent revelations from fellow British boxer Dillian Whyte claim that Fury added the ‘Tyson’ element to make him sound ‘harder’ and that being called Tyson had ‘higher commercial value.’
Responding to these claims, the English fighter has confirmed that Luke is his middle name.
