FedEx Cup top 50: which players are playing in the 2024 BMW Championship?
Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth are among the big names who miss out following the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, won by Hideki Matsuyama.
One tournament down, two to go in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Hideki Matsuyama was the winner at TPC Southwind in the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, which helped determine which 50 players will take part in next week’s 2024 BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Denver.
The field will be made up of the top 50 in the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List, headed by runaway world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler, followed by Xander Schauffele, who won both the US and British Opens this year. Matsuyama jumped five places to third as a result of his victory in Memphis, with Rory McIlroy dropping two to fifth having finished in a tie for 68th (out of 70).

Ahead of the BMW Championship, though, the story is arguably about who’s out, rather than who’s in. All of the other big names you’d expect to be there will be there, with a few notable exceptions (even if they aren’t hugely surprising).

Which players aren’t playing in the 2024 BMW Championship?
There-time major winner Jordan Spieth has struggled to recapture his best form for some time now and his second-from-last finish in the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship left him in 67th place in the standings. With his season over, he is now expected to undergo surgery on his left wrist, which has been bothering him for some time.
2013 US Open champion Justin Rose, who finished T2 at The Open Championship in July, also misses out, with a poor weekend in Memphis proving costly. The England posted one-over par 71s on both Saturday and Sunday to finish in a tie for 22nd, which saw him remain in 55th place in the FedEx Cup standings.
But it was Tom Kim who dropped out in the most agonising fashion. The South Korean started the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship in 43rd place but dropped down to 51st after finishing in a tie for 50th in Tennessee.
Hovland and Dunlap secure BMW Championship spots
On the flip side, excellent performances from Viktor Hovland (T2) and Nick Dunlap (T5) saw them break into the top 50 just in the nick of time, with the Norwegian rising 41 places to 16th. He memorably won back-to-back FedEx Cup events, including the season-ending Tour Championship, in 2023, but had been in danger of not qualifying this year.
