Brooks Koepka has long been touted as a major ‘specialist’ and has got back to doing what he does best at Oak Hill Country Club this week. Four of the 33-year-old’s eight PGA Tour wins have been majors, which include two PGA Championships in 2018 and 2019. And after a run of serious injuries which had appeared to put his future at the very top of the game in doubt, Koepka has given himself a great opportunity of getting back in the winners’ circle for the first time since 2019.

Koepka the biggest ‘mover’ on ‘moving day’

The Florida native leads the field by one shot after posting back-to-back four-under par 66s at the notoriously tough course in Pittsford, New York, with Saturday’s effort allowing him to leapfrog halfway leaders Corey Conners, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler.

Koepka leads by one from Conners and Hovland, who both shot level par 70s in their third round, as did the leader’s one-time enemy Bryson DeChambeau, who is three shots off the lead. Former world number one Scheffler’s Saturday definitely didn’t go as planned, with his three-over 73 seeing him drop four shots back alongside 2013 US Open winner Justin Rose, although he will still feel as if he’s in with a chance heading into the final round.

Is that also true of Rory McIlory? The Northern Irishman, famously chasing his first major win since 2014, just about kept himself in contention with a third-round 69, which leaves him on one-under par, five off the lead. Stranger things have happened.
