With an honourable mention going to Xander Schauffele, who won both the US and British Opens in 2024, Scottie Scheffler has consistently proven himself to be the best golfer in the world this year, which means he looks likely to be a fitting winner of the 2024 Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta and, by consequence, the FedEx Cup.

The 28-year-old has been well clear at the top of the world rankings and the FedEx Cup standings all season but has voiced his frustration at the FedEx Cup format, which means he could ultimately lose out by having one bad round or tournament in Atlanta, or even by suffering an unfortunate injury.

Scheffler extends FedEx Cup lead in Tour Championship

It looks like he needn’t have worried. By virtue of going into the season-ending Tour Championship as the Fed Ex Cup leader, Scheffler had a two-shot head start over Schauffele, who was second, and began round one 10 better off than those ranked 26th to 30th.

The New Jersey native has extended his advantage in the first three rounds and will take a five-shot lead into Sunday. Only Collin Morikawa has outscored Scheffler at East Lake so far, and only the Californian looks to have even the slightest chance of pipping the world No. 1 to the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. Third-placed Sahith Theegala is nine shots behind and surely out of contention.

2024 Tour Championship prize money

The biggest financial reward in the history of golf is at stake at East Lake.

Astonishingly, the winner will pocket $25 million of the $100 million prize purse, double the amount on offer to the runner-up ($12.5 million). The top 12 players will all earn over $1 million, with $550,000 given to the last man in the field.

Once the FedEx Cup has been decided, there are eight FedEx Cup fall tournaments, which are similar to regular season events. The first one is the Procore Championship at Silverado Country Club in California, which starts on Thursday, September 12. The last event one in the series is the RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia, which gets underway on Thursday, 21 November.
