How many times has the US won the Davis Cup?

Though the United States is by far the winningest nation among those who have taken part in the age-old tennis tournament, it’s been some time since the country has tasted success. Could that be about to change in 2023?

2023 Davis Cup: Frances Tiafoe has high hopes for the U.S.A.

If you’ve seen Frances Tiafoe play, then you know the 25-year-old American presents a show like no other. From his crowd interactions to his ‘put your body on the line’ style of play, Tiafoe is all about energy. Indeed, speaking in a recent interview, that’s exactly what the current world No. 11 said in a recent interview with DavisCup.com. “I think the energy you bring out definitely comes back your way. They ain’t got a me in every room,” Tiafoe said. “I wear all my emotions on my sleeve. I want to win every match, but I also understand it’s entertainment. Obviously being a person of color, in a predominantly white sport, means there’s a lot of things that come with that. There’s been a lot of cool fans, a lot of kids. It’s great.”

The man who beat former world No. 1 Rafa Nadal just last year has been brimming with confidence both before and sense, but he does admit that the Davis Cup is something different. “Mac [John McEnroe] and those guys were way to early for me, but I know the history of it. Davis Cup is an unbelievable event,” Tiafoe said. The young American will of course is now preparing for Group D action in Split, Croatia where the first tie will be played against the host nation. “Obviously it’s a huge honour. Something you always want to do, be a part of. So, I’m super excited to be here and see how we go.”

So, how many times has the U.S.A. won the Davis Cup?

By quite some distance, the U.S.A. is the all-time Davis Cup leader with 32 titles. The problem is, however, that the Americans haven’t won a Davis Cup title since 2007, when they defeated Russia 4-1 in Oregon, U.S.A., indeed that was also the last time the Stars and Stripes made an appearance in the finals. Yet, this is the present, and much has happened since then including Tiafoe’s growth as a player, something he believes will serve him and Team USA well.

“I’ve obviously grown up a lot, I now know how to get the best out of myself. I know how to get myself ready, how to play my best tennis.” Of course, the 2022 US Open semi-finalist won’t be the only one on show for the U.S.A., with the likes of Tommy Paul also part of the team, and it’s something he readily acknowledges. “The biggest thing I’m proud of is I think we all have a chance of doing something special. That’s to win Slams, to be a part of winning the Davis Cup, have somebody go deep at the Olympics, preferably myself, to get medals. I think this is the group to do it. To be called one of those guys is pretty special.”
