WIMBLEDON 2023
How much did Carlos Alcaraz earn for winning Wimbledon?
Spaniard Alcaraz edged out seven-time champion Novak Djokovic over five sets to win his second Grand Slam title after the 2022 US Open.
Every professional tennis player dreams of winning Wimbledon, the only Grand Slam played on grass and, for many, the most prestigious of the four on the circuit. A look down the list of previous winners confirms that only the very best have what it takes to triumph at the All England Club and Carlos Alcaraz can now add his name to it after his five-set victory over Novak Djokovic on Sunday.
Equal pay in tennis Grand Slams
As the Gentleman’s Singles champion, not only does the Spaniard gets his hands on the silver gilt (a replica, actually, as the actual trophy’s permanent home is in the All England Club museum), but also a cool £2.35 million ($3.07 million), just like Ladies’ Singles champion Marketa Vondrousova. As has been well documented, there is equal prize money for men and women in tennis Grand Slams, with Wimbledon becoming the last of the four to offer such parity in 2007 (the US Open, by contrast, did so in 1973).
Wimbledon prize money up from 2022
The amount received by the winners increases year by year, with the top prize going up from £2 million ($2.61 million) in 2022 despite the ongoing risk of a global recession.
The overall prize money on offer at Wimbledon was higher than ever before, with a total of £44.7 million ($58.42 million) being dished out to all competitors, rising from £40.35 million ($52.74 million) 12 months ago.
