For the second straight year, Patrick Cantlay fended off the field to take the title at the BMW Championship.

Cantlay holds off Stallings

His final round two-under, 69, was enough to hold off Scott Stallings and Scottie Scheffler who finished second and third respectively. Stallings had a chance to send the tournament into extra holes with a birdie putt on 18.

The 30-year old trailed Stallings by two strokes after a bogey on the 10th hole, but three birdies on the final eight holes gave Cantlay his eighth win on the PGA Tour.

A couple of 68s in his first two rounds put the Californian in the hunt coming into the weekend, but it was his 65 on Saturday that put him in striking distance in the final round.

Cantlay makes history, and cashes in

The BMW Championship is the second to last FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour schedule. Outside of major championships, the event is the longest running regular season tournament on the tour. Last year the event was won by Cantaly at Caves Valley, and this year Cantlay did it at Wilmington Country Club.

With his second straight win, Cantlay made history by becoming the first ever golfer to win the event in back-to-back years. Not only did he make history on Sunday, but he also won $2.7 million.

Cantlay will now try to end the season as he did last year, with a win not only at the BMW Championship but at the Tour Championship as well. He will start next week’s FedEx Playoffs finale two strokes behind the world’s top ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler.

“I’m in a really good spot,” Cantlay said. “It’ll be a little different type of a challenge this year, obviously, being two behind Scottie. He’s played a lot of great golf this year, so I expect the same. But it’s a golf course I really like, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
