American Jake Knapp is the newest name in the winners’ circle on the PGA Tour after wining the 2024 Mexico Open Championship at Vidanta Vallarta. The 29 year old carded a level-par 71 in his final round of Sunday but still won by two shots ahead of Finland’s Sami Valimaki. Knapp’s superb 63 on Saturday, the joint best round of the week, followed a 64 on Friday, with his performance on the middle two days in Mexico instrumental in his victory.

Who is Jake Knapp?

Knapp turned professional at the age of 22 in 2016 but has spent the majority of his career to date on the Canadian Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour, which he graduated from in 13th place in 2023.

The California native, who has won three times on the PGA Tour Canada, becomes the third rookie to win on the main tour this season after amateur Nick Dunlap, who won The American Express in California in mid-January, and Frenchman Mathieu Pavon, who finished first at the Farmers Insurance Open in Phoenix the following week.

Knapp’s pay day for first PGA Tour win

There was a total purse of $8.1 million at the Mexico Open Championship, making it one of the least lucrative events on the 2024 PGA Tour.

As a result, few of the world’s top players featured, with defending champion Tony Finau, ranked 24 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the leading player in the field.

As a result of his maiden PGA Tour victory, Knapp takes home the winner’s prize of $1,458,000, by far the biggest paycheck of his career so far. Currently ranked 101 in the world, he will likely break into the top 100 after his triumph.
