How much prize money does the winner get at the 2024 US Open? Purse and payout

One of the hardest courses on the PGA TOUR, Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, will host this year’s US Open golf tournament.

The 124th U.S. Open golf tournament will tee off on Thursday, June 13, at the famous Pinehurst No.2. Last year’s winner Wyndham Clark’s one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy at Los Angeles Country Club earned the man from Colorado $3.6 million last year. Interestingly, Tiger Woods was the U.S. Open’s first champion to pocket $1 million, receiving the landmark figure for his second triumph in 2002 at Bethpage Black. And just over 20 years later, the winner’s cheque is set to quadruple to $4 million, representing 20% of the $20 million purse.

This year, the United States Golf Association will again hand out, as written before, $20 million in total prize money to the players of their signature men’s championship, with a bigger ratio to the winner, raising the champion’s share for $300,000 going to $3.9 million.

Like its other tournament peers, the Masters and the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open purse has been increased almost in a volatile manner. This is predominantly influenced by the desire to remunerate flagship PGA TOUR events more in line with the payouts received on the LIV Golf Tour.

The USGA has not yet announced the complete prize money breakdown for the 2024 U.S. Open. However, all professional players who qualify for the weekend will receive a share of the prize money. The final prize distribution will be determined after the cut is made following the second round.
