Is Cameron Smith playing at the Tour championship following injury?

Cameron Smith pulls out of the BmW Championship; does this mean the Aussie is missing the season-ending Tour championship in Atlanta?

Cameron Smith, the No. 2-ranked player in the world, has pulled out of this week’s BMW Championship due to a lingering hip injury.

According to his agent, Bud Martin, Smith “has been dealing with some on-and-off hip discomfort for several months and thought it best to rest this week in his pursuit of the FedExCup.”

The announcement comes a day after Smith was assessed a two-stroke penalty before the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. Smith played his ball from an improper spot on the par-13 fourth hole, in the third round of the tournament on Saturday.

Smith’s decision to not compete at the tournament at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware didn’t mean he didn’t intend to play in the final Tour Championship, set for Aug. 25-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

Whether he plays or not at the BMW championship, Smith, who is switching over to LIV Golf after the season is over, is in a great place to advance to the Tour Championship. The 28-year-old is the third-ranked player in the FedExCup playoffs, and in the midst of the most successful season of his career. The Aussie won both THE PLAYERS and The Open at St. Andrews in addition to the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where he shot the lowest score in relation to par in the history of the PGA Tour. Last week in Memphis, Smith finished T13.
