Jaime Munguía ready for Canelo Álvarez
The Mexican super middleweight champ says that he is here to fight the best, naming Benividez, Charlo, and Álvarez as potential opponents.
The WBC super middleweight silver champion Jamie Munguía is hopeful of fighting countryman Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez. In an interview with ProBox TV, the Tijuana native said that “it would be an honor to share the ring with [Canelo]” and confirmed that he was “ready for any challenge at 168 pounds.”
Referring to the possibility of the match taking place, Munguía added, “the truth is I don’t know, since one of Charlos [Jermell] fought him, I think it might not be such an attractive fight for the public.”
Regarding Canelo’s thoughts on not fighting other Mexicans, Munguía said, “with all due respect, one should fight with the best, whether Mexican or wherever they are from, we are here to show that we are the best, either Mexicans or from any part of the world. I would like to face Canelo or Benavidez but if it’s not possible, against [Jermall] Charlo would be a good fight, and we are here to face the best.”
A few weeks ago Munguía emphatically defeated John Ryder in a fight where the Brit was dropped three times in nine rounds. “I think that little by little since the last fight we have been gaining the respect of the people and obviously I think that with this fight we did it a little more, so the truth is that we have to keep working, keep moving forward and keep proving that we are ready.”
Munguía has flowered under legendary trainer Freddie Roach. “I went back to what is my thing. I learned a lot of things with the other trainers, but the truth is that I have learned to do my style with Freddie.”
No matter who is lined up next, Munguia is ready and more than happy to share a ring with Canelo. Asked about the potential fight, John Ryder, who faced them both and is now retired, has speculated that a Canelo-Munguia bout could sell out the 100,000 capacity Azteca Stadium in Mexico.
