Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury: Is the fight cancelled?
The brother of a champion vs a controversial YouTuber. It´s the fight many of us want to see, but with recent developments putting the bout at risk, will it actually occur?
With Fury recently declaring that he´s unable to enter the U.S.A. the fight is most definitely in jeapordy, but has it been cancelled?
What´s the latest with the Tommy Fury vs Jake Paul fight?
As reports indicated earlier this week, Tommy Fury has been barred from entering the United States. While the ‘Love Island’ star turned professional boxer cited visa issues as the central reason why, it´s now known that both his father John Fury and half brother Tyson - the reigning heavyweight champion of the world - are also prohbitied from travelling to America due to their ties to Daniel Kinahan, the founder of the now defunct boxing promotions company MTK Global. Kinahan was recently named by Dublin’s High Court as a senior figure in organized crime. That included but was not limited to involvement in international drug-trafficking operations and firearm offenses. Since then U.S. officials have announced a $15 million reward regarding any information on Daniel Kinahan and his family.
How did Tommy Fury and Jake Paul get here?
It´s important to recall that this is not the first time the bout has been postponed or derailed. Having initially been rescheduled in December last year after Fury pulled out at the last minute with a broken rib, the pair then entered into an increasingly hostile war of words. Fury was later handed a 24 hour deadline by Paul to which he agreed and then signed a contract to prove it. Fast forward to today and there are real doubts as to whether the fight will finally take place. Even if Fury were to resolve his issues and then travel to the U.S.A., the fact that Fury´s team - his father is a central part - can´t travel makes matters worse.
Jake Paul told to cancel Tommy Fury fight
Though there has been no official word yet, it´s now clear that the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Tommy Fury may not actually happen. Aside from the fact that Fury is currently unable to enter the U.S.A. there is also growing pressure on Paul himself to cancel the fight. UFC legend Chael Sonnen recently urged Paul not to entertain talk of staging his fight with Fury in the UK, and believes the YouTube star should move on.
“Please stop this game of chicken. If Paul offers to take fight to UK there will another reason that pops up. Let the guy slide. This never should have been pursued. It’s mean spirited and feels wrong even by my incredibly low standard.” Sonnen tweeted. As mentioned the fight´s cancelation is not official, but one has to imagine given the way in which Jake Paul has hit back at Tommy Fury over the last few months, he won´t be very enthusiastic about the idea.
