With the field now set for the upcoming LIV Golf League, we’re taking a look at one of the 12 teams that will be participating in the first team tournament, Torque GC.
As we head for the inaugural season of LIV Golf almost upon us, it’s time to get to know the low down on what to expect from the field, the upcoming tournament in Mexico and of course, who is the young and talented Joaquin Niemann that’s leading the charge of Torque GC
LIV Golf’s 1st season promises to be an interesting one
Having recently confirmed the full the full 12-team, 48-player field set to compete all season in what is being called a “truly global golf league featuring 14 tournaments in seven different countries around the world,” LIV Golf is set to begin play on February 24th at Mayakoba’s El Camaleón Golf Course in Mexico. Some of the game’s biggest stars will be there.
“In less than a year, LIV Golf has reinvigorated the professional game and laid the foundation for the sport’s future. In 2023, the LIV Golf League comes to life,” said Greg Norman, LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner. “The most popular sports in the world are team sports, and our league format has already begun to build connections with new audiences around the globe. Major champions, current and future Hall of Famers, and up-and-coming stars are all committed to creating this new platform for world-class competition as the sport evolves for the next generation.”
What does the field look like in LIV Golf?
It’s worth noting, that just over a quarter of the line up are major champions with a combined 24 major titles between them. Of the 48 total players, there are 16 nations represented as well as 18 Olympians and a grand total of 125 collective appearances in both the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup. To simplify it, LIV Golf League players have registered 526 worldwide wins across multiple tours, and four players have held the title of World No. 1. Interestingly, players who finishing in the top 24 of last year’s LIV Golf Invitational Series Individual Standings (minimum four events played) secured spots in the 2023 LIV Golf League. Alongside them, will be the winners of the 2022 Asian Tour Order of Merit and the 2022 Asian Tour International Series Order of Merit. League exemptions and captains’ selections round out the rest of the team rosters for the league’s first full season.
Torque GC
We’re not going to lie. All eyes will likely be on the twenty-four-year-old sensation, Joaquin Niemann, who will lead the all-Latin Torque GC. Alongside the captain, we will also be seeing fellow Chilean Mito Pereira, Colombia’s Sebastian Munoz and Spain’s young talent, David Puig. Where Niemann is concerned, he finished seventh in the Individual Champion standings last year, although he only made just four regular season starts. As for Munoz and Pereira, members of the 2022 Presidents Cup International Team, they will be making their LIV Golf debuts and we’re betting they are going to turn some heads doing so. Truth be told, this team has got some talent on show.
