Danielle Collins will appear in her first ever WTA 1000 final today, when the American takes on Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the women’s singles trophy decider at the 2024 Miami Open.

Can Collins follow in Clijster’s Miami Open footsteps?

Collins, who announced in January that this will be her final year on the WTA Tour, beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semi-finals on Thursday, downing the 14th seed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Ranked at 53 in the world, the Floridian is aiming to become the first unseeded player to win the Miami Open women’s singles title since Kim Clijsters in 2005.

Rybakina, who is seeded No. 4, beat Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old was runner-up at the Miami Open last year, losing the final in straight sets to the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova.

Collins vs Rybakina: head to head

Collins won the players’ first meeting, triumphing in two sets in the quarter-finals of the 2021 Silicon Valley Classic - a tournament she went on to win.

Since then, however, Rybakina has had the upper hand, claiming three victories in a row against the 30-year-old. Most recently, she won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at this year’s Abu Dhabi Open in February, on her way to lifting the title.

Krajicek aiming for doubles title

There is also US interest in today’s other game at the Miami Open, as Texan Austin Krajicek goes for men’s doubles success together with Croatia’s Ivan Dodig. They take on India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden.
