Who is Clément Turpin, referee for Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona, Champions League quarterfinal second leg?
French official Turpin will oversee Atletico’s return leg against Barcelona, with hosts protecting a 2-0 aggregate lead in Madrid.

French referee Clément Turpin will officiate Tuesday’s second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid (3 p.m. ET). It will be the first time he has taken charge of a European match between the two clubs.
All-French officiating crew appointed
Turpin will be assisted by Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages on the sidelines, with Mathieu Vernice serving as fourth official and Jérôme Brisard in charge of the video assistant referee system. All members of the officiating team are French, according to UEFA.
Atlético return leg history under Turpin
For Atletico Madrid, who enter the match with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, this will be the sixth Champions League game they have played under Turpin’s supervision.
Their record in those matches stands at two wins, two draws, and two losses.
The most recent came on Feb. 24 in the second leg of the knockout round playoff following the group stage, when Diego Simeone’s side defeated Club Brugge 4-1.
The season before, Turpin officiated the first leg of Atletico’s round of 16 tie against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, a 2-1 win for the hosts.
Earlier meetings include a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the Metropolitano in October 2022, a 3-1 win away at Porto in December 2021, a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in Madrid in December 2020 when Hansi Flick was coaching the German club, and a 1-0 Bayern win in Munich in December 2016.

Barcelona’s record with Turpin
Barcelona have had Turpin as referee in four Champions League matches, posting two wins, one draw, and one loss.
The most recent was a dramatic 3-3 draw against Inter Milan in the first leg of last season’s semifinals, played in Barcelona on April 30, 2025.
He also officiated Barcelona’s group stage matches at home against Dynamo Kyiv, a 1-0 win in October 2021, and Borussia Dortmund, a 3-1 win in November 2019.
Their only defeat under Turpin came in one of the club’s most painful European exits, a 3-0 loss at Roma in the second leg of the 2018 Champions League quarterfinals, which eliminated Barcelona from the competition.
Positive impact on Spanish teams in European finals
Turpin has also left a positive impression on Spanish clubs in European finals.
He officiated Real Madrid’s 1-0 win over Liverpool in the 2022 Champions League final and Villarreal’s Europa League final victory over Manchester United in 2021, which ended 1-1 after extra time before Villarreal won in a penalty shootout.
Other Champions League quarterfinal assignment
In the other Champions League quarterfinal Tuesday, Liverpool host Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, with Italian referee Maurizio Mariani in charge.
PSG enter the second leg as favorites after a 2-0 win in Paris in the first meeting.
