Montezemolo: “Ferrari has no leader”
The former president of the Italian team for 23 years speaks harshly about the current Maranello team: "It lacks a strong and determined soul."
The 2025 Formula 1 season will be remembered for many things—but for Ferrari fans, it marks yet another year without a championship.
The legendary Italian team has now gone 17 seasons without clinching either the Drivers’ or Constructors’ title. And this year, the drought deepened: not a single race win, while rivals McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes all found their way to the top step of the podium.
Montezemolo speaks out: Ferrari needs more than speed
Former Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who led the team from 1991 to 2014, believes the issue runs deeper than just performance. Speaking to Sky Sports during the Milan premiere of his new documentary Luca: Seeing Red, the 78-year-old didn’t mince words.
“I saw the beautiful images of the fans,” Montezemolo said, “and then a team that, despite all the hype, hasn’t won a single race this year. Even if they had won one, after so many years, Ferrari needs to win the championship.”
Leadership vacuum and lost identity
Montezemolo’s biggest concern? The lack of leadership and soul within the team.
“What I regret most is seeing Ferrari without a true leader,” he emphasized. “There’s no clear direction, and more importantly, the team lacks a strong, determined spirit. They make announcements that often raise unrealistic expectations. First, you get results—then you make announcements.”
Eight races left, but eyes already on 2026
With just eight races remaining in the season—including three sprint weekends—Ferrari still has a shot at salvaging some pride. But the focus in Maranello seems to be shifting toward 2026, when sweeping regulation changes are expected to shake up the grid.
While other teams continue to push for wins in 2025, Ferrari appears more invested in preparing for the future.
