Ukraine’s Usyk can become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era when he takes on Britain’s Tyson Fury in Riyadh this weekend.
Oleksandr Usyk takes an undefeated record into this weekend’s eagerly anticipated fight against Tyson Fury - a bout that will determine the identity of the first undisputed world heavyweight champion in the four-belt era. Usyk will put his WBA, WBO and IBF world titles on the line in Riyadh, while Fury - who is also yet to be beaten - heads into the match-up as the reigning WBC champion.
What is Usyk’s professional record?
Usyk has won all 21 of his fights as a professional boxer, stretching back to a November 2013 debut victory over Mexico’s Felipe Romero in Kyiv, where the now-37-year-old triumphed by technical knockout. In his 11 years as a pro boxer, the Ukrainian has amassed 14 knockouts.
Usyk spent the first half of his career in the cruiserweight division, before making the step up to heavyweight in 2019. Since then, he was won five fights, chalking up one knockout. That KO came in his most recent bout, a ninth-round victory over Britain’s Daniel Dubois in Wroclaw, Poland, in August 2023.
When did Usyk win his heavyweight belts?
Usyk has held the heavyweight WBA, WBO and IBF belts since September 2021, earning the titles when he claimed a unanimous-decision victory over Britain’s Anthony Joshua in London.
He then retained the titles in an August 2022 rematch in Jeddah - defeating Joshua by a split decision in Saudi Arabia - before completing a second successful defence of his belts against Dubois last year.
Former king of the cruiserweight division
Usyk already knows how it feels to establish himself as an undisputed champion. Before switching to heavyweight five years ago, he became the first fighter in cruiserweight history to unify the division’s WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF titles. Having already secured the WBO and WBC belts, he completed the set when he earned a unanimous-decision triumph over Russia’s Murat Gassiev at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium in July 2018.
Heavyweight “the king of categories”
Speaking ahead of his clash with Fury, Usyk conceded that his belt-unifying achievement at cruiserweight is dwarfed by the prospect of being the undisputed top dog of the heavyweight division.
“It’s different at cruiserweight.” he told Sky Sports. “This is heavyweight. It’s the king of categories. A lot of people who train boxing, who have an opportunity to step up to heavyweight, all people dream of [boxing at] heavyweight. It’s the big category. It’s absolutely the king.”
