Rey Misterio Sr. dies at 66: What we know about the Mexican wrestler’s death
The former wrestler has passed away at the age of 66.
Former wrestler Rey Misterio Sr has died at the age of 66-years-old. The cause of death is, at the time of writing, unknown.
Uncle of WWE superstar Rey Mysterio Jr, Miguel Ángel López Días was born in Tijuana, Mexico in 1955 and started out as a boxer before making the move to wrestling.
He would work as a mentor to many fighters getting into wrestling before introducing his nephew to the sport, who would eventually become a Hall of Famer.
The President of Lucha Libre AAA, Marisela Pena, was quick to share her tribute: “All members of the @luchalibreaaa family regret the passing of Rey Misterio Sr. We raise a prayer for his eternal rest and send our condolences to his family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace.”
It has been a tough time for Mysterio Jr, as his father, Robert Gutiérrez, died just a few weeks ago, aged 76.
On that occasion, the ‘619′ fighter wrote “Father: thank you for giving me the life I have. You did more than set the example of how to love & maintain a strong marriage and father 4 boys, you were the example and passed every single time until your death with flying colours.”
Misterio Sr made his Mexican debut in the ring in 1976. In 1990 he appeared at WCW Starrcade where fought alongside Konnan, eventually losing to The Steiner Brothers.
