The famous fitness instructor Richard Simmons has passed away aged 76, one day after celebrating his birthday.
Simmons shot to fame in the 1980s for his high-energy fitness videos, which catapulted him to household name status status across the States.
How did Richard Simmons die?
At the time of writing, the cause of death is unknown, although some sources are reporting ‘natural causes’.
After turning 76 on Friday, Simmons wrote on social media “I never got so many messages about my birthday in my life!” Simmons wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I am sitting here writing emails. Have a most beautiful rest of your Friday.”
Simmons opened a number of gyms across the country after rising to fame wearing brightly coloured outfits, while also becoming a popular face on TV and a recognisable voice on radio. He was also involved in political activism, including supporting non-competitive physical education in public schools.
The fitness instructor, over recent years, had retreated from public life and preferred to stay away from the limelight.
