Rory McIlroy to cut back on golf in 2025: how many events are in the LIV Golf League?
Northern Irish star McIlroy has revealed he “hit a wall” in the aftermath of his late collapse at the 2024 US Open.
Rory McIlroy says he will be reducing his tournament schedule in 2025 after revealing he “hit a bit of a wall” in the second half of the 2024 season after his US Open collapse. By the end of the year, the Northern Irishman will have played almost 30 events, the majority of which will have come on the PGA Tour.
How many tournaments has McIlroy played in 2024?
“It’s been a long season, and I’m going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-US Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover,” the 35-year-old explained.
After stating he would end 2024 having played 27 tournaments, he went on to say, “I’m usually a 22 sort of person. But again, that was when I was in my 20s and didn’t have the responsibilities that I do now. I’m going to try to cut it back to like 18 or 20 a year going forward, I think”.
Since McIlroy revealed his intentions, online mischief makers have pointed out the LIV Golf League, of which he was initially a fierce critic before softening his stance somewhat in recent times, has only 14 official events, with the potential to play in the four majors making up a total of 18.
Statistic show McIlroy, who has a four-year-old daughter, has played in 14 PGA Tour events (regular season tournaments, Signature Events and FedEx Cup playoffs), four majors, two DP World Tour tournaments, and the Olympic Games, which makes a total of 21.
He says he will play another five before the end of the year, which makes 26. The numbers are a little out somewhere, but you get the gist: he’s been a busy man. For comparison, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has played 19 times and has hinted he will take a break after the Presidents Cup at the end of the month.
Rory McIlroy’s almost ends major drought at US Open
McIlroy’s major drought has been well documented, with the last of his four victories coming all the way back at the PGA Championship in 2014. In mid-June, he led the US Open with four holes left to play but lost by one to Bryson DeChambeau after bogeys at 15, 16 and 18, which included two missed putts from just a few feet away.
The world No. 3 immediately took an impromptu month-long break to “process everything” and played six events following his return, posting three top-10 finishes. However, he also performed disastrously at the British Open, missing his only cut of the season after being 11-over par for his opening two rounds.
Earlier in the year, McIlroy won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event, with Shane Lowry, and the Wells Fargo Championship the following week. He concluded his PGA Tour season with a T9 at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atalanta.
McIlroy’s remaining tournaments in 2024
The Irishman is expected to finish his year by playing in five DP World Tour events, starting with next week’s Irish Open at Royal County Down and ending with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai in mid-November.
