Ryan Garcia hits the jackpot with a $12M self-bet win against Devin Haney
‘KingRy’ pulled off one of the biggest upsets in recent times but also had the most lucrative night of his life by defeating Devin Haney.
Boxing fans will remember last weekend for a long time, but what seems a sure thing is that it will remain on Ryan Garcia’s mind forever.
KingRy went from a big prospect to a confirmed star by defeating Devin Haney at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and he also hit the jackpot by winning $12 million by betting $2 million on himself to beat the previously undefeated WBC light welterweight champion.
Moreover, according to Garcia, he made around $50 million from his fight against Haney on DAZN PPV. The 25-year-old talent didn’t prove that he made the $2 million bet on himself, but if that’s true, he made around $62 million in one night.
Garcia, who has only lost to Gervonta Davis in his professional career, seemed to be struggling with his mental health over the last weeks. He posted a few controversial tweets and was seen strangely expressing himself in multiple interviews. However, that could have been a strategy to distract Haney’s team ahead of their fight. If that was the case, it worked to perfection.
Garcia’s ‘only’ defeat to Haney: $1.5 million for not making weight
Garcia is the man of the moment in boxing. His performance against Haney surprised everyone to record the biggest win as a professional.
While many pundits and boxers praise Ryan’s performance, others believe that the fact that he was heavier than his opponent played a major role in Haney’s defeat.
Garcia didn’t make the 140-lb weight limit for the fight but came in 3.2 lbs heavier at 143.2 lbs. That means he didn’t have any issues working on his weight cut for the fight, while Haney’s body had to go through more work to meet the weight requirements.
Garcia automatically lost the right to fight for the title but also a side bet he made with Haney: $1.5 million. In other words, he lost $500,000 per every pound he had to make for the 140-lb weight limit.
However, that loss doesn’t seem that painful if Garcia made a total of $62 million on the night. But fans are probably asking themselves if those are the real numbers or if it’s just another of Ryan’s doubtful statements, especially regarding the $12 million by betting on his victory.
