Ryan García responds to Óscar de la Hoya: “Golden Boy Promotions should promote me, not defame”
Ryan Garcia, along with his legal team, responded to the lawsuit filed by Óscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.
Oscar de la Hoya, through Golden Boy Promotions, sued Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KO’s) and his attorney Lupe Valencia for breach of contract in Nevada State District Court.
‘King Ry’ did not sit idly by and with his legal team responded with a press release that Golden Boy Promotions should promote his career, not defame him.
“Golden Boy is obligated to promote and support Ryan Garcia, not smear him on Twitter and file a baseless public lawsuit against him,” said James 'Bo' Pearl, a partner at the law firm Paul Hastings and Garcia's trial attorney, to BoxingScene.com "Ironically, the lawsuit itself constitutes a violation of the very agreement that Golden Boy seeks to enforce."
García and De La Hoya met in December 2016 and renewed their contract in September 2019. However, the relationship soured after ‘King Ry’ lost to Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KO’s) in Las Vegas. In the post-fight press conference, De La Hoya and trainer Joe Goossen walked out on Garcia.
The lawsuit is a response to a request from Ryan Garcia
According to James Pearl, the partner at the law firm representing Garcia, the lawsuit is an offensive response to a request by the boxer to heal the relationship between him and Golden Boy.
“This is an obvious retaliation to Ryan’s written request last week to mediate multiple breaches of contract by Golden Boy.” Rather than address these serious issues in mediation (as the contract requires), Golden Boy is rushed to court to sue his fighter,” said the lawyer.
