Ryder Cup: Team Europe 12-9 Team USA
Ahead of the 2025 edition, there is an important scoreline that continues to linger, and be misrepresented.

With the Ryder Cup returning to U.S. soil, golfing royalty Sir Nick Faldo has already found the first talking point of the week, and it came courtesy of the welcoming scoreboard at Bethpage Black. It’s just that he got it wrong as we’ll explain below.
What’s the historical Ryder Cup score?
The six-time major champion, who is on site in New York for the 2025 contest starting Friday, shared a video on X showing the giant scoreboard behind him. The numbers on display: USA 27, Europe 15. Faldo grinned and pointed it out to those watching. “Hah, bit of psychological warfare,” he quipped.

He then reminded fans – with a slight miscount – of the correct accounting. Since Europe only first competed as a combined side in 1979 (previously it was just the much smaller Great Britain and Ireland), the tally, he says, stands at 11 Ryder Cup wins for Europe and seven for the United States.
A quick check of the records shows that the actual number is USA 9-12 Europe, with one tie.
Ryder Cup 25 -Did you know since 1979 Europe has a better away record than the US 🇺🇸. We have won 4 times giving a 33% success rate. Our last win away was 2012 at Medinah. So we at Clubs to Hire are very bullish including our man and X Ryder Cup winner David Howell. Go Team 🇪🇺 pic.twitter.com/vV6nn7F7yE

Bethpage, one of the most raucous venues in American golf, will host the biennial showdown for the first time. The U.S. team, led by captain Keegan Bradley, is seeking to reclaim the cup after Europe’s dominant win in Rome in 2023.

For Faldo, the scoreboard mix-up – if you can call it that – only adds a little extra spice to a week already set to be heavy on noise, drama and patriotic fervour. Bring it on.
