Final Leaderboard

This is how the leaderboard looks after the first round of play from Los Angeles Country Club. Fowler and Schauffele make history, DJ makes a late surge, Clark introduces himself to the world and McIlroy played flawless golf until 18, but is in the thick of the hunt heading into Friday.

as.com

McIlroy's first bogey comes on 18

A huge bogey for McIlroy after his approach let him down on 18. He went into the thick stuff right next to the green and failed to get up and down for his first bogey of the day on his final hole of the round. For as much as a bogey hurts, the putt he had to save double was far from easy and he'll rest his hat knowing he's in the hunt after 18.

as.com

The two leaders in the house after the first round chumming it up, comparining cards after breaking the US Open record for low score in a round. McIlroy did it first, but Schauffele was right behind him joining him in the history books just minutes later.

as.com

DJ tapped in for birdie on his penultimate hole of the first round to get to -7 before dropping a shot for the first time all day on his last hole.

as.com

Brian Harman just finished his round with a par on 18. He left his right to left put just short of the cup and will settle for a five under (65) to end his round.

as.com

DJ bogeys 18

Johnson had a downhill putt that just lipped out after an almost miraculous up and down. He heads into the house at -6, but he will rest his head thinking about that tee shot on the ninth that he skied over the Par 3 to end his round.

as.com

Johnson just pitched it out of the sand and laid it up softly on the back of the green, but still has a lot of work to do if he wants to save par and keep his bogey free round going on the final hole of the day.

as.com

McIlroy just left his long birdie putt on 17 a few inches of the cup and he will head into the final hole -6.

as.com

DJ skies the green on final hole

Johnson had a chance at history walking on to the tee on the Part 39, but will be lucky to walk away with a bogey after launching his iron shot over the green and into the second bunker behind the cup. Johnson is in store for a rough finish.

as.com

DJ knocking on the door

Dustin Johnson just had a chance to draw level with Fowler and Schauffele with a long eagle putt from the 17 green, but after a long, looping right to left putt he taps in for birdie and is sitting in third at -7 for the day. He's got one more hole to try to tie history.

as.com

Wyndham Clarke would have gone to sleep tonight plenty happy with a five under (65) but drilling this long putt to end his round will allow him to sleep that much deeper tonight before a big day where there will be plenty of people talking about him.

as.com

Rory took a break from all the front nine birdies, but didn't pass up a chance to hunt the pin on the short Par 3 15th. That led to a his first birdie on the back nine, and he still has yet to bogey a hole in Ro. 1.

as.com

It's about time we give Sam Bennet some love. He put this tee shot right at the front of the green and had a slow up hill putt that he rolled in to go to -5. As I was typing this out he missed his par putt on 17 to drop a shot going into the final hole.

as.com

Clark finishes strong with birdie

Wyndham Clark just finished his first round with a beautiful right to left birdie putt to pull to within two of the leaders in what was an incredible opening day at Los Angeles Country Club. A lot of people who didn't know the name Wyndham Clark will know his name come morning time tomorrow.

as.com

Rory back to birding

Rory just stuck his short wedge shot snug off the tee on the short Par 3 15 and sank the seven footer to join Johnson at -6. That's his first birdie since posting five in the front nine.

as.com

Lefty in the house

Phil Mickelson is in the house with a -1 (69) which is his best first round in the US Open since 2015. He would have loved to spared a bogey or two in his last four holes, but he is still in it going into Friday.

as.com

It doesn't get much better than this approach shot from Johnson who tapped his put in for two straight birdies and he is now -6, just two shots back of the leaders and US Open record holders.

as.com

New kid on the block making noise

Sam Bennet, who just turned pro within the last few weeks, just birdied his second straight hole and he is -5 with two holes to go.

as.com

Johnson solo in second

After birding 15 and 16, Clark got himself into trouble off the tee at 17 and ended up with a bogey to drop a stroke which puts him back to -5 and leaves Johnson all alone at -6.

as.com

Dustin Johnson has played bogey free golf to start his week from Los Angeles Country Club. He birdied 5 and 6 to put him at -6 and just like that he he is within two of the leaders and history with three holes to go.

as.com

Sam Barnett is making a charge up the leader board and is now on the front page with a bogey on 15, and he is all alone at -4 on the day and is sitting in 7th with a few more holes to go.

as.com

Two names we haven't been talking much about are Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson. Both are playing with Rory McIlroy, which might explain why they have been overshadowed. Koepka is +1, but Johnson is suddenly -5 after birding three of his last five holes. He has four holes to try to keep pace with Fowler and Schauffele.

as.com
Leader board 2

Ok, I think we are all caught up with the highlights of this historic day, let's focus on the final groups that are now all in the back nine. Here's a look at the leaderboard at at 8:45 pm ET.

as.com

Rory had two quick birdies to start his round, and was three under through five holes. He would have two more birdies to close his front nine and he remains at -5 after 11 holes.

as.com

Phil drops two late shots

Phil got himself into some more trouble after a bogey on the 6th with a wayward tee shot on the 7th he had to play a bump and run from under a pine tree and missed a long par putt. He drops back to -1 on the day with two holes to go.

as.com

Sam Burns sank the second ace of the day on 15, and had a club toss to match the shot. He has had peaks and valleys in round one, but none like his hole in one on 15. He's -1 through 13 holes.

as.com

McIlroy came out and showed that he means business with a near 400 yard out of the gate. That would ignite his first nine in which he posted five birdies.

as.com

Check out this long range effort from Lefty to get to -3 on the day. That was his second in a row, and he looked like maybe he was going to make a late surge up the leaderboard before a bogey on the 6th. He's -2 with three holes to go.

as.com

Schauffele made sure that Fowler wouldn't be all alone in the record books after the first round. It's rare to see history play out in front of your eyes. It's even more rare for it to happen twice in the same day.

as.com

This would be Fowlers 10th and final birdie, which came on 17. He had a chance for birdie on 18, but his 62 would break the US Open record and tie the low round in a major championship. He would stand at the summit alone for just a few minutes.

as.com

Scheffler went birdie birdie on 15 and 16 to get to -4 but would birdie to end his great day on a sour note.

as.com

This is when we started to think about maybe, just maybe Ricky Fowler was on track for a historic day. He was -7 with three holes to go and a birdie away from history.

as.com

There was a point during the day that Schauffele and Fowler were taking all of the air time. They kept hitting dart after dart which set up birdie after birdie.

as.com

Fowler was playing so well, he had time to help out one of  the players in his group get a little closer for his birdie putt. Fowler sunk his putt for his fourth straight birdie and go to -6 on the day.

as.com

Victor Hovland made news just over a week ago playing caddie for a lifelong buddy. I wonder if this was his caddy tip or his caddies caddy tip that led to this hole out eagle on No. 2.

as.com

Mattieu Pavon with the first hole in one of the weekend, and he looked as surprised as anyone on the course when the ball fell into the cup. He's +1 on after the first 18.

as.com

Wyndham Clark just watched his Denver Nuggets win their first NBA Championship, and is looking to get his first major at the US Open this weekend. He is now -5, tied with Rory McIroy at the moment.

as.com

LEFTY SINKS A DEEP ONE!

Phil Mickelson just dropped a putt from across the green on 12 for his second straight birdie. He's now -3 and on the first page of the leaderboard.

as.com

Schauffle was playing right behind Ricky Fowler and was surely keeping an eye on the scoreboard as Ricky continued to set the pace in round one. This was the start of a back nine in which he went -5 to tie the record low round in a major.

as.com

Harman on a heater

Brian Harman has birdied four of his last five holes, and is all alone at -6 for the day and two back of the lead!

as.com

Fowler started his first round on the back nine, and wrapped up 18 with a birdie before going back to back on 1 and 2 to start the second half of his round.

as.com

Scottie Scheffler is searching for major championship number two after winning The Masters in 2022. He is sitting pretty in the club house at -3 after his first round.

as.com

Ricky left some meat on the bones of this birdie putt but he has been reading the greens like the one in his back yard. He dropped the putt and ended the first nine with five birdies.

as.com

Rickie Fowler was must see TV in his opening round from LA. The SoCal kid was locked in on the greens, pin seeking from the fairway and piping it off the tee.

as.com

Look at this front nine from Rory McIlroy. He hasn't won a major since the Open Championship in 2014. He looks prime to make a run after this incredible run to start his weekend.

as.com

Brian Harman went birdie-birdie on 7 and 8 and is -5 along with Rory McIlroy. We'll get you as many highlights as possible as he continues his first round.

as.com

RORY IS ROARING!!!

McIlroy just took advantage of the easiest hole on the course with a birdie after just missing an 18 foot eagle put long and to the left. He's tied for third with Harman at -5 and just three back of Schauffele and Fowler!

as.com

SW Kim always seems to be in contention when major season comes around and he is right in the mix after 18 holes with a three under 67 after Thursday.

as.com

Max Homa is a hometown kid, growing up in LA and relishing the opportunity to play at this luxurious course in a town he calls home. He went sub zero on number three and finished -2.

as.com

Brian Harman just birdied at the 8th to get to -5 jumping ahead of Wyndham Clark and Rory McIlroy. The Par 5 8th has been playing as the easiest hole on the course today, and Rory is about to putt for Eagle.

as.com

John Rahm is coming off of a Masters win, and knows what it's like to win the US Open. The Spaniard is -1 after a three birdie day including this one his first hole of the day.

as.com

Xander Schauffele wasted no time getting into red numbers with this beautiful putt. He would have plenty more birdies as his record setting day went on.

as.com

These bunkers are deep, they are uncomfortable and they can ruin a round, but Bryson DeChambeau played this beautifully out of the nasty stuff, and he's in the club house at -3.

as.com

Rory with his fourth birdie!

Rory McIlroy just birdied number 7 and is now -4, sitting at a tie for third before even hitting the back nine. He is looking in the mood so far. Can he keep this pace up on what has been a record setting day in LA?

as.com

Have a look at the read from amateur Michael Brennan on the chip on number three. Watch it come rolling all the way back from the back of the green and drop in for birdie.

as.com

The amateur Omar Molarsen got thing started at 6:25 am PT, and had a heck of a first nine. He looked like a seasoned vet shooting three under and had a share of the lead for a moment. He ended his round +1, but what a day it's been for the youngster.

HIGHLIGHTS COMING

OK enough talk for a little while, let's get guys and girls caught up with some of the action you may have missed out on early today. There have been a few hole in ones, some historic rounds and some incredible shots in the opening day from LA.

as.com

Late comers making a charge

How about Wyndham Clark? He is -4 through 8 holes and is currently in sole possession of third place. There is a pack sitting behind him at -3, including Scottie Sceffler,S.W Kim, Paul Barjon, Sam Burns, Brian Harman and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy is -3 through six holes after birding the first two holes of the day and the fifth.

as.com

Going low early in LA

The exclusive LA Country Club is tucked into the tree line right in the thick of the most expensive zip codes in the city, and the country. The North Course is a Par 70, that includes three Par 5s, including the very scoreable 578 yard first hole, and five Par 3s. There are a couple of those Par 3s that are brushing 300 yards, but the 15th is one of the shortest Par 3s you’ll see on the tour. This course is tricky It will apparently play as short as 90 yards before three long Par 4s to lead into the clubhouse.

as.com

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE

Ricky Fowler had a sensational first round that was going to put his name on top of the leaderboard and in the headlines after shooting a US Open record 62, and tying the major championship record for lowest round ever. His record lasted about half an hour, before Xander Schauffele entered the club house with another 62. The US Open is known for their brutal courses and scores around E, but this year looks like it might have some fireworks in store.

What's to come

We have two groups that are yet to tee off. Pereria, Schaake, Truslow, Puig, Grey and Simmons are all stepping to the first tee. Leaderboard at 6:00 pm ET

What a day it has been, and before anything else we should have a look at the scoreboard, which has a couple of historic numbers posted at the top. Ricky Fowler and Xander Schauffele pulled away from the pack early but there is still a lot of golf to play, and room for someone to join or break their short standing record.

Where are we?

This is not a well known course by any means. The members of this glamorous club have kept it to themselves since the gates opened, but this week the world will get to know this course that serves as the club to the LA A-listers. Someone said they expected to see the Tour Buses that go around showing you celebrities houses in Hollywood, and after seeing where this course is, it wouldn’t be a surprise. Rodeo Drive is about a 15 minute walk from here, but you would never know when you're walking around the course. We are used to seeing the stars of the big screen around this area, but this week it will be the stars of the links taking over in Los Angeles.
