Serena Williams beats Danka Kovinic, Daniil Medvedev cruises to victory, and all the best from day 1 of the US Open in Queens.

The 2022 US Open kicked off yesterday as Serena Williams began her final tournament as a professional tennis player. Here are the highlights from day 1 of the US Open.

Serena Williams cruises to victory in first round

The crowd went wild when Serena Williams walked out onto the court to play her opening match against Danka Kovinic on Monday.

“When I walked out, the reception was really overwhelming,” said Williams. “It was loud and I could feel it in my chest, and it was a really good feeling.”

Williams defeated Kovinic 6-3, 6-3. She improves to 99-3 in the Open after the first set and will advance to the second round on Wednesday. There, she will face World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit.

Kyrgios made it to the Wimbledon final and now has started off well at the US Open. On Monday, he beat his fellow Australian opponent, Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. 7-6.

He will advance to the second round to face French player Benjamin Bonzi.

Coco Gauff wins in straight sets

Gauff racked up eight aces in her match against Leolia Jeanjean, keeping her opponent from getting even one. She defeated Jeanjean in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. The 18-year-old is looking for her first Grand Slam win.

She now advances to the second round to face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse.

Daniil Medvedev shows why he’s No. 1

World ranked No. 1 Medvedev showed us why he’s got that status on Monday. He cruised past opponent Stefan Kozlov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 with 10 aces, all the while not allowing Kozlov even one ace.

“The match was maybe not that intensive and long, but I sweated a lot and it was not easy,” said Medvedev, laughing.

Medvedev won the US Open last year and is looking for a repeat. He advances to the second round to face Arthur Rinderknech on Wednesday.
