According to sports historians, the standard of 18-hole golf courses was established as a design choice by the first modern golf course rather than being influenced by interesting myths, as some may suggest.

The game of golf originated in Scotland during the 15th century, with the first 18-hole course built at St. Andrews in 1754, forcing the game to be played differently as a result of the change.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews is the club’s current name, and it has hosted the Open Championship on plenty of occasions.

How much does the most expensive 18-hole courses cost?

This question often comes up and is very difficult to answer because prices change quite often and with some packages, membership fees vary, but as of 2024, we believe these are the most expensive courses to play a single day of 18-hole golf.

The most expensive golf clubs in the world for 18 holes:

7) Wynn Golf Club: Las Vegas, Nevada: $550

6) Whistling Straits, Straits Course: Haven, Wisconsin: $555

5) TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course: Ponta Vedra, Florida: $600

4) Pebble Beach: Pebble Beach, California: $620

3) Royal Melbourne: Melbourne, Australia: $700

2) Shadow Creek: Las Vegas, Nevada: up to $1000

1) Fancourt Country Club: George, South Africa: up to $2,000

Any other golf clubs - and there are plenty - with higher prices have not been included as there is simply no way one can rock up in their Ford Escort and play a game with a bag of weak lager in your hand.

Memberships are required that cost well past the $10,000 mark, meaning that only the highest of society in terms of income and wealth can afford to use the car park.
