What is Canelo Alvarez’s net worth?

After Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez announced that he would honor his trilogy contract with Gennady Golovkin before pursuing the rematch to avenge his loss to Dmitry Bivol, speculation around the Mexican four-weight champion’s motives for such a move began.

There is no doubt that the bigger payday by far is the GGG fight, which forms the heart of the complaints levelled at Canelo by Bivol’s camp.

Boxing is famously known as “the red-light district of sports”, and Jimmy Cannon’s oft-quoted epithet is in reference to not only how fights are made, but also how the total purse is calculated. With guarantees plus a percentage of the gate, added to Pay-Per-View revenues, it is often difficult to get a grasp on what a fighter will actually earn from a fight.

These calculations are always tricky, and the bigger the fight, the more Byzantine the accounts. They don’t come much bigger than Canelo Álvarez.

Forbes magazine estimates his worth at $90 million, but that is clearly a flawed figure, as he earned $85 million from two fights alone, those against Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant.

A closer figure is given by Celebrity Net Worth, who put his value at double the Forbes figure, giving Álvarez a value of $180 million.

But even this does not tell the whole story. In 2018, Canelo signed a five-year $365 million contract with Golden Boy and DAZN. Now four years into that deal, Canelo should have earned $275 million, although the deal could be back-loaded giving him a larger purse for later fights.

But what is known is that from 2018 to 2021, Canelo earned $220 million from his fights and endorsements.

Outside of the boxing ring, the boy from Guadalajara is also pretty savvy with his investments. He is reported to earn somewhere in the region of $20 million a year from his real estate investments, as well as owning a couple of extremely profitable taco restaurants in both Mexico and San Diego.

In 2021, Álvarez announced a new venture, a new chain of gas stations called Canelo Energy, with plans to open up to 100 locations across Mexico. So far, the venture is still in its early stages, but if it bears fruit, it could be his biggest venture yet, with almost unending profits to be made.

With so many irons in so many fires, it is tough to put an exact figure on the worth of the Mexican pound-for-pound king, but to put it in the $250 million range does not seem too far fetched. And when the GGG trilogy fight is complete, who knows? The sky is the limit.
