Coco Gauff beat 27th-seeded Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to move onto the round of 16 of the 2024 US Open, setting up a tie with a tricky opponent.

“[I] felt like a new person coming out,” the third-seed said after she pooped into the bathroom one set down against Svitolina to splash her face with cold water and gather her thoughts, “I just didn’t want to leave the court with any regrets.”

‘I knew I had to bring my best tennis’

Gauff added that the win “means a lot. I knew today was gonna be a tough match, every time, Elina she’s a fighter. I knew I had to bring my best tennis, I thought I played well. I served much better than last match except the last service game but overall I was proud of what I was able to do.”

The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd was witness to her early error but a revitalised Gauff ended up smashing 9 of 11 games in one stint, ending the match victorious despite losing the opening set. This is a repetition of what she did three times en route to claiming the 2023 trophy at Flushing Meadows, and it was in her mind as she completed the comeback:

“It was in my mind today. It gave me a lot of confidence,” Gauff admitted, “just because it felt like déjà vu a little bit.”

Who does Coco Gauff play next? When does she play?

Gauff will face No. 13 Emma Navarro, one of her teammates at the Paris Olympics, on Sunday 1 September.

There is recent history between the two, as Navarro beat Gauff in the fourth round at Wimbledon, meaning the American is out for revenge against her Spanish foe.

Navarro made the fourth round after coming through a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Marta Kostyuk, the 19th seed.
