Jessica Pegula, the American tennis star and sixth seed at the 2024 US Open, is set to face a formidable challenge in her next match at Flushing Meadows. Pegula will take on the world number one, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, in the quarter-finals – a showdown that could be one of the highlights of the tournament.

And fans eager to see Pegula in action won’t have to wait long. The quarter-final match is scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, although the time is yet to be confirmed. The Pole, fresh off a dominant win against Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, 6-4, 6-1 in just 90 minutes. Pegula, meanwhile, took two minutes less to advance after a convincing victory over another Russian, Diana Shnaider, 6-4, 6-2.

Swiatek vs Pegula: what is the head-to-head?

While Pegula has shown solid form of late, winning 13 of her last 14 matches on the North American hard courts, including her second consecutive WTA 1000 title in Canada, she faces an uphill battle in this one. Swiatek leads their head-to-head encounters with six wins to Pegula’s three. The last time they met, the Polish star demonstrated why she’s the reigning queen of the tennis world.

Despite the daunting task ahead, Pegula remains upbeat. Her recent performances have been impressive, and she’s certainly aware of the Stars and Stripes in the Arthur Ashe Stadium stands.

“Today was the best I’ve felt off the ground,” she said after her round of 16 match. “There’s always a lot of pressure here, but I like it. It’s nice being an American here and getting all the support.”

Has Pegula ever reached a Grand Slam semifinal?

The quarter-final match is more than just another game for Pegula, as it’s an opportunity for her to rewrite her Grand Slam story. So far in her career, she’s reached the last eight in all four majors but has yet to break into the semi-finals. Standing in her way is Swiatek, the only former singles champion left in their draw, who has shown no signs of slowing down. It’s a tough ask but maybe the home crowd can make the difference.
