Taylor Swift was the talk of the town in London not too long ago, and now Taylor Fritz is hoping it is his turn in the limelight in the English capital. The 26-year-old opened up his Wimbledon 2024 campaign with a straightforward victory over Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the first round on Tuesday (July 2), setting up a second-round tie against Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech on Thursday (July 4).

Fritz’s impressive stats in first-round Wimbledon win

Fresh from becoming the first three-time title winner at the Rothesay International Eastbourne tournament on Saturday, Fritz took last week’s form into his opening Wimbledon match-up, defeating O’Connell in straight sets.

The No. 13 seed recorded 18 aces and won 95% of points on his first serve. Fritz broke O’Connell on five occasions and saved both break points he faced, with the numbers adding up to a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 triumph.

Fritz will now take on another unseeded player, Arthur Rinderknech from France, in round two. Ranked 76 in the world, the 28-year-old defeated former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori over five sets in his first appearance in the tournament this year.

Rinderknech has already beaten his previous best at Wimbledon and is one win away from matching his most impressive Grand Slam achievement, which was reaching the third round at the US Open in 2022.

Fritz vs Rinderknech: head to head

Fritz and Rindeknech have only met once before, with the American coming out on top in four sets in the round of 64 at Roland-Garros in 2023.

Fritz vs Rinderknech: start time, how to watch

The second-round matchup between Fritz and Rinderknech will be played on Thursday July 4. At the time of writing, the order of play has only been confirmed for the show courts (Centre Court and Court No.1 ), which the clash will not be taking place on. We will update this information when it becomes available.

If you are in the US, you can watch Wimbledon on ABC, ESPN, and the Tennis Channel.

What is Fritz’s best performance at Wimbledon?

Fritz is making his eighth appearance in the main draw at the All England Club, having posted his best Wimbledon performance so far in 2022. The California native reached the quarter-finals two years ago, before losing a five-set thriller to two-time champion Rafael Nadal.

In 2023, Fritz was eliminated in the second round, throwing away a two-set lead as he went down to Sweden’s Mikel Ymer.

The American has won eight career titles but is still searching for his first Grand Slam victory. In fact, he has never got beyond the last eight of any of the four majors.
