It’s home advantage for Tommy Paul as the 14th seed moves into the Round of 16 of the US Open after defeating Gabriel Diallo 7-6, 3-6, 1-6, 3-7 last time out, setting up a huge tie in the next phase of the competition.

Paul was the heavy favourite against the Canadian who was having his best ever US Open performance, but the 129 spot gap in the rankings showed as the 27-year-old finished the match after three hours and 26 minutes.

In a sloppy game that saw 117 unforced errors, the Bronze Olympic medalist’s talent was too much and Diallo was broken nine times on 20 break points, winning just 30 per cent of his second serve points.

The American now goes into the Round of 16 with his head held high, but he knows that his next opponent is not someone to be taken lightly.

Tommy Paul’s next opponent

In the Round of 16, Paul will play world number one, Jannik Sinner on September 2. The time is yet to be confirmed.

Well, I play the No. 1 in the world [Jannik Sinner] tomorrow, so I don’t know if I’m thinking ‘opportunity’ too much. I mean, those guys [Shelton and Tiafoe] stepped up and played awesome tennis. Different parts of the draws have opened up, but mine has not. I have a tough match ahead of me, but I’m excited for it.”

We’ve had some great matches,” said Paul when asked about his next match. “I remember I played him on clay, had some match points against him. Then the last match–I think it was in Toronto–he played awesome. I didn’t feel like I did too much wrong. He kind of took the racquet out of my hands. I’m definitely going to try and, you know, make it uncomfortable for him. He is probably the best ball striker on tour, and I’m not. I don’t want to go toe to toe just banging on the baseline with him. I want to try and mix things up.”

It’s an exciting time,” Paul said after advancing to the fourth round, “You know, we all want to do really, really well here. We all want to make it to the last weekend. You know, hopefully at some point we’re playing each other in the last weekend. I love having all the other Americans going deep in tournaments, kind of rolling off of each other.”
