After overcoming compatriot Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Australian Open women’s singles tournament on Monday, the United States’ Coco Gauff now faces British opposition at Melbourne Park.

Gauff, the No.3 seed down under, will take on world No. 173 Jodie Burrage, who secured an emotional opening-round win over France’s Léolia Jeanjean.

Gauff sees off Kenin in two sets

Chasing the second Grand Slam singles title of her career - and her first at the Australian Open - Gauff beat 2020 winner Kenin in straight sets on Rod Laver Arena, prevailing 6-3, 6-3. The win was the 20-year-old’s tenth singles victory in a row, and her sixth successive match without dropping a set.

I knew going in it was going to be difficult, but I’m happy with how I played,” Gauff said post-match, per the WTA. “I maybe could’ve served some second serves better […]. I’m just happy I was able to manage today.”

Burrage rewarded for retirement decision with memorable victory

Meanwhile, Burrage claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jeanjean on Court 13, shedding tears of joy after earning the first main-draw Australian Open victory of her career. The triumph came just months after the 25-year-old considered retiring from tennis, having been dogged by injuries.

Looking ahead to her second-round meeting with Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, Burrage described the challenge of facing her high-profile opponent as a “free swing”.

I’m a proper underdog,” the Briton said, per Reuters. “[I’ll] see what I can do, see where my level is at with arguably one of the best players in the world right now.”

When is Gauff vs Burrage? How can I watch it on TV/online?

In the second round of the 2025 Australian Open women’s singles, Gauff and Burrage will face off on Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The match is scheduled to be played at 3:00 a.m. ET.

Viewers in the US will be able to watch the clash on the Tennis Channel. Your streaming options include fubo, which offers a free trial.

What is Gauff and Burrage’s head-to-head record?

Gauff and Burrage have met just once before on the WTA Tour, at the 2023 Eastbourne International tournament. The American won 6-1, 6-1 in the second round, before exiting to countrywoman Madison Keys in the semi-finals.

Who will Gauff/Burrage face in the third round?

The winner on Rod Laver Arena will progress to a matchup with Spain’s Cristina Bucsa or Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
