When was the last time an American won the Australian Open?

With only two Americans left in the competition, we take a look at the last time that an American raised the Melbourne Trophy.

Update:
Melbourne (Australia), 23/01/2024.- Coco Gauff of the USA gestures to the crowd after winning her quarter final match against Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine on Day 10 of the 2024 Australian Open at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, 23 January 2024. With Taylor Fritz’s loss to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals today, the hopes of the United States to see one of their countrymen fall onto the shoulders of Coco Gauff, who will face Aryna Sabalenka en the semifinals.

There was a time when the US men ruled the Australian Open, but those days are long past. As we come out the other end of a long reign by Serena Williams, it looks as if the American days of dominance on the women’s side may be equally waning.

The last American man to win the Australian Open was André Agassi, who took the top prize in 2003, 2001, 2000, and 1995. His final victory in 2003 also marked the last appearance by an American man in the final at Melbourne.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams dominated the finals throughout the 21st century, but the last American woman to take top prize was Sofia Kenin in 2020.

There is another ray of hope for the Stars and Stripes, however. Besides Ms Gauff, the mixed doubles sees Rancho Mirage, California native Desirae Krawczyk pairing with Brit Neal Skupski with a chance. They are into the semifinal where they will face Australian pair Olivia Gadecki and Marc Polmans for a spot in the final.
