Serena Williams is ready to say goodbye to tennis

With Serena Williams having now confirmed that she intends to walk away from the game that has made her a global icon, the world of tennis has been left in somewhat of a daze as it prepares to say goodbye to one of the best to ever grace the court. Indeed, in an article published on Tuesday, August 9th the 40-year-old winner of 23 Grand Slam titles cited a need to ‘evolve away from tennis’ and “grow her family,” as the main factors behind her monumental decision.

“I have never liked the word retirement,” Williams stated. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. ...Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” Williams went on to add that her daughter, Olympia would like to “be a big sister”.

Will the US Open be Serena Williams last appearance?

While she didn’t specify it, the universal expectation at present is that Serena Williams will officially hang up her racket after the US Open is over. Set to get underway on August 29th in New York, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year has experienced a surge in interest due to the aforementioned expectation. Needless to say, that interest has had a direct effect on ticket prices and incredibly so to say the least. With tickets to the final on September 10th going for as high as $12,000, it looks like many fans will have to settle for saying goodbye to the legend from the comfort of their sofas. It’s not just the finals either, with early round entrance costs said to be starting at $500. If one thing is clear, it’s that you’re going to have to pay a high price if you’d like to see Williams’ last time out on court.
