Who has qualified for the 2023 US Open so far? What LIV players have exemptions?

The next men’s major golf championship is right around the corner, with Los Angeles Country Club playing host to the 2023 U.S. Open June 15-18. This will be the first time an LA area course has hosted this event in the last 75 years, and the North Course will be the 53rd different venue to hold the USGA’s signature men’s championship.

In April, the entries for the U.S. Open officially closed, setting a new record with a staggering 10,187 individuals vying for a chance to compete in the prestigious national championship. What sets the U.S. Open apart is its inclusivity, allowing any professional golfer or amateur with a handicap index of 1.4 or less to attempt qualification for the tournament. This opportunity extends even to professional golfers who have joined the LIV Golf League, despite being prohibited from entering PGA Tour events. These golfers can still participate in the U.S. Open if they have earned previous exemptions or if they successfully navigate through the Local and Final Qualifying rounds. This aspect of the U.S. Open reflects its commitment to providing opportunities for a diverse range of talented golfers to showcase their skills on a national stage.

How many LIV players have qualified to the US Open?

In the end, 15 LIV golfers were exempt or qualified for the championship: Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Martin Kaymer (as U.S. Open winners in the last ten years), Phil Mickelson (off his 2021 PGA Championship victory), Cameron Smith (2022 Open Championship) Joaquin Niemann (qualifying for the 2022 Tour Championship), Abraham Ancer, Patrick Reed, Mito Pereira, and Thomas Pieters, as well as Sergio Garcia, Carlos Ortiz, Sebastian Munoz and David Puig (via qualifying).

Three-time U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods officially withdrew from the championship as an exempt player due to his slow recovery from a recent surgery.
