The wait is nearly over and the fight that all of Mexico is waiting for is just days away. Twelve rounds between two Mexicans, Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguía with every title on the line. This matchup is huge!

It is all the more interesting that Canelo is sharing the ring with another great Mexican fighter, since he has stated several times that he has no interest in facing other Mexican boxers. This Cinco de Mayo weekend clash will be the first time that the undisputed super middleweight champion has squared off with another Mexican since 2017, when he faced and defeated Julio César Chávez Jr.

What makes Munguía special? Why is there so much expectation around this latest contender to Canelo’s crown?

Who is Jaime Munguía?

Jaime Munguia was born in Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border from San Diego. This is a city that has produced some of Mexico’s greatest fighters, like Erik ‘Terrible’ Morales and Jackie Nava. From a young age, Munguia dedicated himself to the gym and has devoted his young life to the sport of boxing. At 27 years old, the six foot 168 pound fighter does not forget his roots, standing instead on that firm base that started with a debut TKO over Manuel Mora in 2013 and will possibly bear fruit on May 4.

Jaime Munguia’s nickname is “Tatanka,” which means “bison” or “buffalo” in Lakota, and that is a very apt description of his style. He fights straight forward, at 100 miles per hour, never backing up. Munguia is undefeated and there is pressure on the shoulders of his new coach to maintain that. Freddie Roach is a man of monumental experience in boxing, taking both Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto to the top.
