Who is Tyson Fury’s trainer, SugarHill Steward?
Saturday night’s fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is set to be epic, but who’s preparing “The Gypsy King” for this heavyweight bout?
The fortunes of boxing’s elite await Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk as they clash in an historic contest on Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The winner will become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era to add prestige to their riches and expectations are that they’ll go at it once again in a rematch no matter the outcome.
Training is complete for the two men, and now the finer focus points and tactics will be honed until the first bell rings. So, who is the man in Fury’s corner?
When did SugarHill Steward start with Tyson Fury?
The man responsible for keeping Tyson’s head in the fight over the years is SugarHill Steward. The American trainer has been with Fury since 2019 taking him to winning the WBC and The Ring titles, beating Deontay Wilder in their first fight together in February 2020, then repeating it in October of the following year. The demolition of Whyte, though, was their first in the UK.
Steward, known as Javan ‘Sugar’ Hill until 2019 with the name change a nod to his uncle who passed away in 2012. Emanuel Steward was an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, who worked out of the iconic Kronk Gym, which is where SugarHill and Fury met in 2010.
He had previously worked as a chef and a police officer before following his uncle into training boxers full time. With Tyson he has really bonded and now the question is if Fury will keep the winning partnership going. Usyk is the next in line.
