The light heavyweight title was on the line, and after a match to remember, Jamahal Hill defeated former champion Glover Teixeira to take home the belt.

The light heavyweight title was on the line, and after a match to remember, Jamahal Hill defeated former champion Glover Teixeira to take home the belt.

There’s a new UFC light heavyweight champion after Jamahal Hill defeated Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision in UFC 283, held at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Hill and Teixeira went the whole five rounds, but although the 43-year-old former champion put up a good fight, he couldn’t hold off the Michigan-based fighter.

Glover Teixeira announces retirement

With his defeat at UFC 283, the Brazilian fighter announced that he would be retiring from the sport. Teixeira praised Hill for his performance, then said it would be his last fight, shortly after fellow MMA veteran Shogun Rua announced his own retirement in a preliminary bout.

“It’s an honor to put the gloves down on the same night as [Rua],” said Teixeira.

A much-anticipated rematch canceled

It was the UFC’s second attempt at crowning a new light heavyweight champion. UFC 282 was supposed to feature the much-awaited title rematch between Jiri Prochazka and Teixeira, whom the Czech defeated to clinch the light heavyweight belt in June last year.

A vacated light heavyweight title

However, Prochazka suffered a serious shoulder injury in November and had to back out of the fight and vacate the title. The organization booked Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev for UFC 282, and upgraded the bout to a vacant title fight. The showdown ended in a split decision draw, which meant there continued to be no champion.

The match’s outcome did not please UFC President Dana White, and he quickly scheduled the championship fight between Hill and Teixeira.
