Why could Bercy lose the organization of the Paris Masters?
Jannik Sinner’s decision to leave the Masters in Paris because he had to play two matches within 14 hours exposed the problem with the current Bercy hall.
Janik Siner withdrew from the Paris Masters after being scheduled to play two matches within 14 hours, highlighting the issue with Bercy Hall. In this case, it is challenging to organize a competition with such a large number of tennis players (56).
The Paris Open has only three courts, one of which is phenomenal, but the other two are more like sheds. Some tennis players even refuse to play on the secondary courts.
As a result, on some days, as many as six matches have to be held on the Central Court, and that is why Sinner ended his match with the American Mackie McDonald only at 2:47 a.m. When the organizers decided that the Italian should play again the next day around 5 p.m., he was fed up and withdrew from the tournament. Although this doesn’t happen yearly, sometimes previous matches last too long, and the last one suffers.
Many people have been wondering why Siner wasn’t assigned to play in the evening slot to get some rest. However, the organizer deemed it more important for Novak Djokovic, the best tennis player of all time, and Holger Rune, the defending champion, to take to the court, as they generate more interest.
As a result, the Bercy organizers are considering renovating the hall or moving the tournament to another location since the current venue is not spacious enough. According to “L’Équipe,” the La Defense Arena, located on the other side of Paris, is considered a potential new location. This arena, the largest in Europe, was built in 2017 and can hold up to 40,000 seats for concerts and 30,000 for rugby, making it versatile enough to host events in several sports. There is enough space to build multiple tennis courts, allowing the tournament to proceed.
Another alternative is for the competition to remain in Bercy but lose the 1,000 category and become a 500 series, which is not preferred by anyone for obvious reasons.
