Why isn’t Patrick Cantlay playing in the 2024 John Deere Classic?

With Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy absent, Cantlay had been due to be the highest-ranked player in the field at TPC Deere Run.

The 2024 John Deere Classic isn’t one of the more lucrative events on the PGA Tour and takes place just a week before many of the world’s top golfers travel to Scotland for the Genesis Scottish Open, which immediately precedes the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon.

The field at TPC Deere Run perhaps reflects that, with the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy taking the week off. And it has been weakened further by Patrick Cantlay’s withdrawal from the tournament.

Why isn’t Patrick Cantlay playing at the 2024 John Deere Classic?

The world number eight was listed as the favourite to win the tournament by most bookmakers due to being the highest-ranked player in the field. His absence means Sepp Straka, the world number 24 and defending champion, has now taken over that mantle.

Cantlay’s withdrawal was confirmed by the PGA Tour on Monday, with the 32-year-old later revealing on social media he had suffered an unspecified injury while training for the event, which he has never played in before.

“While training for the John Deere Classic, I sustained an injury. Out of an abundance of caution and on the advice of my team, I unfortunately have to miss this week’s event. We are optimistic about a speedy return to competition. Thanks to the fans in the Quad Cities for your support and hope to see you next year!”

When is The Open Championship 2024?

“An abundance of caution” suggests the eight-time PGA Tour winner’s mind is firmly on making sure he is fit for The Open Championship.

The final major of the year will take place at Royal Troon in Scotland between 21 and 24 July.

Despite being one of the most consistent players in world golf, Cantlay is still searching for his first major victory. He has finished inside the top 10 in all four majors, including tied for third at the US Open (2024) and PGA Championship.
