Whyte claims Fury knockout was illegal, wants rematch

Dillian Whyte has claimed that the punch WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury threw to knock him down in their Saturday bout was illegal, and is asking for a rematch.

The Gypsy King knocked out the Body Snatcher in the sixth round before an audience of 94,000 at Wembley Stadium. It looked like a definitive win for the still-undefeated Fury, but Whyte says it was not a fair fight.

The 34-year-old told Sky Sports Boxing that the knockout blow was illegal because it was a two-handed shove that caused him to fall to the canvas and not the right uppercut.

“When the uppercut landed I was buzzed. But obviously I was trying to recover my senses. He proper full-on pushed me like that and I fell over and hit my head on the canvas, which is illegal,” he said.

“This ain’t wrestling, this is boxing. But you know, you let Fury do what he wants and get away with it.”

Referee Mark Lyson inspected Whyte after he stood up and decided to call off the bout. The fighter was not permitted to continue fighting and was given medical attention instead.

Whyte says referee did a ‘terrible job’

The boxer says that Fury went to the referee and asked him to not let the fight carry on. Whyte insists that the referee should have given him time to catch his breath instead of ending the match.

“I should have been allowed extra time to recover and then carried on fighting.”

In the eyes of many fans, Fury was in control for most of the fight, but one judge’s scorecard gave Whyte rounds two and three. The scores did not matter in the end because Whyte was knocked out.

Fury has spoken of his intention to hang up his gloves, but Whyte says that he wants a chance at a rematch.

“He said he’s going to retire… I hope he doesn’t retire because I want another go.”
