What happened at the 2024 Australian GP?
Carlos Sainz emerged victorious at the Australian Grand Prix, marking a triumphant comeback just two weeks post-appendicitis surgery. The race witnessed Max Verstappen’s first retirement in two years due to a brake problem, ending his streak of nine consecutive wins. Sainz, fending off his teammate Charles Leclerc, clinched the win amidst a final-lap crash by Mercedes driver George Russell, which triggered a virtual safety car.
Lando Norris secured third place for McLaren, denying his teammate Oscar Piastri a chance to claim Australia’s first podium in Formula 1. Lewis Hamilton’s early retirement due to a power unit issue compounded Mercedes’ woes, while his teammate Russell’s crash further dampened their day.
Sergio Perez finished fifth for Red Bull, followed by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin. Yuki Tsunoda secured eighth place, earning Red Bull their first points of the season. Williams faced setbacks with only one driver, Alex Albon, finishing 11th after his teammate Logan Sargeant’s car was given up following Albon’s wrecked car in Friday practice.
