2024 Spanish Super Cup: what happens if a match ends in a tie?
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Osasuna will challenge for the Spain’s first trophy of 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
LaLiga has only just resumed after a break for Christmas and New Year, yet Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Osasuna are already on another league hiatus as they take part in the Spanish Super Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between Wednesday 10 and Sunday 14 January.
Which teams qualified for the 2024 Spanish Super Cup?
In theory, the winners and runners-up of both LaLiga and the Copa del Rey in the previous season qualify, although that is rarely the case with at least one team normally doubling up. In 2022-23, cup winners Real Madrid finished second in the league, which means Atlético Madrid, who finished third, have taken the second LaLiga spot in the 2024 Spanish Super Cup.

Who are the semi-finals of the 2024 Spanish Super Cup? Who plays who?
On Monday, Atlético Madrid were drawn to face Real Madrid in the last 16 of this season’s Copa del Rey, a match which will take place on Thursday 18 January. That means there will be two Madrid derbies in little over a week, with the city rivals also facing off in the first semi-final in the Spanish Super Cup on Wednesday 10 January. The match in Riyadh kicks off at 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT.
The second last-four clash will see Barcelona take on Osasuna the following day (Thursday 11 January), also starting at 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT.
The semi-final winners will progress to the final, which is scheduled for Sunday 14 January (kick-off 2:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT). All matches in the tournament will be held at KSU Stadium in Riyadh, the home ground of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
What happens if Spanish Super Cup matches are tied after 90 minutes?
As has been the case in recent editions of the Spanish Super Cup, matches that are all square after 90 minutes will go to extra time, composed of two periods of 15 minutes. If the two teams still can’t be separated, a penalty shootout will then take place.
Since the switch to the current four-team format in 2019-20, a number of matches have been decided by a shootout, including the 2020 final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid and both of last year’s semi-finals. Athletic Club defeated Barcelona in extra time in the 2021 final, while Madrid also beat Barça in overtime in the Clásico semi-final in 2022.
