AC Milan lose 2-5 against Sassuolo in Serie A embarrassment: match summary and goals
Pioli’s future is in doubt after the loss to Sassuolo at San Siro.
AC Milan have been thumped 2-5 by Sassuolo in a Serie A embarrassment, putting manager Stefano Pioli’s future into doubt. The shocking defeat adds to the bad run of form the team are currently under, having lost 4-0 to Lazio just days before. It is the first time they have conceded 5 goals at home in Serie A for the first time since 1997.
The game against Sassuolo got away from them around the 20 minute mark when two quick goals were fired in from Defrel and Frattesi, before World Cup finalist Olivier Giroud pulled one back for the home side with a fantastic header.
Milan’s woes continue
Domenico Berardi, who ended the game with a hat-trick of assists, put the third past the Milan goalkeeper, Ciprian Tătărușanu, after just half an hour. Milan had the opportunity to climb the table and even take second place over rivals Inter, but two shortcomings over their most recent matches have put a serious question mark on the side’s capabilities for the rest of the season under Pioli.
After half-time, things didn’t get any better, with a penalty being awarded and duly put away by Laurienté, making the score 1-4. Matheus Henrique slipped the ball under the goalkeeper to make it 5 with just ten minutes to go after the ball was won high up the pitch by the relentless Sassuolo press.
Some consolation would be awarded to Milan after Origi hit a wonderful shot from the left side of the box that left Consigli with no chance of saving it as the ball swerved and dipped into the top corner, but no late comeback was ever a possibility for a Milan side who look at the start of a bad wobble that could heavily impact their season.
